A Houston man was arrested after hitting a pedestrian and driving nearly 3 miles early Tuesday morning while the man died in his passenger seat, according to police reports.
Police arrested 45-year-old James John Onak for failing to stop at a crash involving a death and driving while intoxicated after striking a 32-year-old man who was attempting to cross the Gulf Freeway on foot at about 12:30 a.m. after his vehicle had broken down.
Onak struck the man, whose body smashed through the windshield glass and landed on the passenger seat of Onak’s black Mazda.
Police say Onak exited the freeway and was driving on a side street when he was pulled over by a Harris County constable, who saw the victim in the passenger seat.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
