Six people are set to receive $6.8 million from Baltimore’s housing authority for lead poisoning they suffered when residing in the city’s low-income housing projects.
The money will go to pay just some of over $12 million in judgments owed to former residents by the Housing Authority of Baltimore City. The judgments were awarded years ago and range in amount from $365,000 to more than $4 million.
Use of the $6.8 million – which had been earmarked for public housing assistance – to pay lead paint victims recently received federal approval.
According to housing commissioner Paul Graziano, the funds were originally intended to be used to pay rents for 700 low-income households.
